What We Do

Since its inception in 2016, Human Aid Now (initially named Human Aid in Greece) has supported small-scale, flexible grassroots organizations providing humanitarian help to refugees on the borders of Europe. We have paid stipends for the volunteer-staff and contributed to project costs, blankets, food and medicine as well as services such as medical advice, showers, recharging of phones, information on legal rights and doing advocacy together with other ngo’s in the field. Such projects have been supported through 2024. As of 2025, this ‘Grassroot Accelerator Programme’ will be transferred to Haella Foundation (https://haella.nl/foundation/), a Dutch charity already supporting many of our projects abroad. They have a small professional staff and are better equipped to take the necessary fundraising to a next level. (see previous projects, add link)

humanitarian projects in Amsterdam

Since September 2016 -with an enormous expansion during the Covid-pandemic starting in 2020- Human Aid Now has provided weekly food packages and other basic items to undocumented refugees in Amsterdam as well as to a small group of people with papers falling through the cracks of the system. Since the end of the pandemic in 2023 we have been scaling down, but a core group of vulnerable people in need of support remains. We continue to provide food packages and some hygiene items to these people, in close cooperation with grassroot organizations in the neighborhoods and with the Red Cross as dedicated partner, for our services are complementary. This food program is financed by the municipality and by a group of charity funds. We also have several adjacent projects to meet other basic needs of the beneficiary population. Human Aid Now itself only has unpaid volunteers.
