Since 2020, Just Action runs a Free Market where refugees, asylum seekers and vulnerable local residents of Samos have access to healthy food to cook themselves, hygiene items and second hand clothing, which people can choose like in a normal shop.
Currently over 600 people a month are reached, involving approximately 25.000 items. Refill bottles are used for various products in order to eliminate plastics. The refugees are given bus tickets to enable them to make the trip from the camp into the city where the Free Market is situated, and combine their trip for other purposes as well.
Goods which Just Action purchases are procured from local suppliers. Fresh vegetables are grown through the garden project. Cardboard boxes are recycled into fuel-bricks for heating.
The core team involves the founders Vasilli and Lene, an international volunteer and two refugees who participate in serving the beneficiaries, stocking up the goods, ordering new supplies and doing the administration.
The team also links other refugees to job opportunities on the island, thus boosting their income, stability and self-confidence. Besides all of these practical actions, Just Action works together with other NGO’s on the island. Jointly, they are vocal advocates for the protection of basic human rights for refugees, confronting the local authorities and European Union representatives with reports of flagrant violations of these fundamental rights and deficiencies in the most bare necessities such as access to drinking water and sufficient food in the official refugee camp.
Since 2016, HAN has provided more than 80 tons emergency supplies like blankets, food and medicine, mostly donated by our partners and supported more than ten Heroes in Thessaloniki, Samos, Patras, Calais and Bosnia amongst others. HAN spends 100% of funds on its goals and are matched 50-100 fold in value (8 mio Euro’s) by donations in kind and contributions by other NGO’s.
