Support for long-term volunteers working at grassroot organizations on the borders of Europe
From HAN’s inception in 2016 through 2024, Human Aid Now has been supporting long-term volunteers working at grassroot projects providing basic humanitarian aid to refugees on the borders of Europe.
By donating stipends to key volunteers, Human Aid enabled them to remain in the field for longer periods of time, ensuring that experience and skills needed for the project did not seep away.
Organisational Support
The grassroot projects serving refugees on the borders of Europe also incur costs such as renting a space to convene or store basic goods, purchasing or collecting such goods and reaching the beneficiaries (note: many goods are received in kind without incurring costs or at a great discount).
We have also contributed to other direct project costs such as for blankets, food and medicine as well as services such as medical advice, showers, recharging of phones, information on legal rights and doing advocacy together with other ngo’s in the field.
Regularly, volunteers who were refugees themselves participated in the projects, helping out with translation services, cooking, being a liaison with other refugees and providing information in their own languages. This gave them a sense of purpose and an opportunity to develop themselves, whilst being of great importance to the project.
Many ngo’s also do advocacy work such as informing the European Parliament about dire conditions under which refugees often live in Europe and how to better address their needs.
Human Aid Now has contributed to such organizational costs and provided support for a number of grassroot organizations to become more sustainable. We also shared good practices and relevant contacts in our network.
Transferal Grassroot Accelerator program to Haella Foundation
As of 2025, Human Aid Now’s ‘Grassroot Accelerator Program’ has been transferred to Haella Foundation (https://haella.nl/foundation/), a Dutch charity already supporting many of our projects for refugees on the borders of Europe. Haella has a small professional staff and is better equipped to take the necessary fundraising to a next level.
